SHAUN AND KELLY PODIUM AT THE BURTON US OPEN

After a warm day, a rain day, a blizzard and now sun, the 30th US Open has pretty much seen every type of weather imaginable within 72 hours. Actually, pretty classic Vermont conditions. Luckily for the halfpipe finals today, the sun decided to come out and soften up at least one wall of the pipe. There was a lot of anticipation as Kelly Clark was looking for her 17th win in a row, the return of Danny Kass to pipe after a 3 year absence, and of course Shaun White. Any time Shaun drops in to the pipe everyone pays attention.
The women kicked off the morning with some amazing riding, pushing the boundaries of women’s snowboarding. With some great runs coming from 15 year old Arielle Gold and Elena Hight, it looked like Kelly Clark was going to have her work cut out for her this time. Kelly’s first run put her in the top spot until Elena laid down one of the cleanest, most progressive runs anyone’s seen in a while, sneaking herself into first. Kelly had two more runs to try to bump Elena out of the top spot but couldn’t quite top Elena’s score of a 86.50 and ended up with a 86.19 with a clean and stylish final run. Kelly’s win streak of 16 has finally been snapped, but expect to see Kelly come back stronger than ever next season.

On the men’s side, everyone was excited to see Danny Kass return to the halfpipe after not riding pipe since 2009. The level of snowboarding has progressed so much since Danny won his titles at the Open with back-to-back 1080’s, and it didn’t look like he came expecting to win. Regardless, it is always fun to watch Danny ride. With classic Danny style he strung together some clean runs and his scores over three runs only increased as he got more comfortable. Christian Haller really came alive in his last run with an 84.31, putting him on the podium for a short time before Benji Farrow and Louie Vito knocked him down to 4th. Shaun White always puts on a show, and this Open was no different.

Shaun landed a super clean and as always, gigantic run on his first attempt, locking him into 1st with a 90.44. Shaun was the very first to drop and gave everyone three runs each to try to catch his score. The closest anyone could come was Louie Vito’s last run of an 89.38. The level of snowboarding shown by the other riders makes it look like Shaun will be continually challenge next season.

Results:
Men:
1. Shaun White 90.44
2. Louie Vito 89.38
3. Benji Farrow 86.00

Women:
1. Elena Hight 86.50
2. Kelly Clark 86.19
3. Ellery Hollingsworth 80.56
